Chapter 26

The next half hour was little more than a daze for Bridgette. She remembered Delray and Hoffman arriving shortly after she put the phone down, but not much after that. Now seated in Don Raisin’s office with a bloody towel pressed up against the left-hand side of her head, she did her best to compose herself as Delray walked back into the office followed closely by a diminutive, well-dressed woman in her early fifties.

The woman hung back near the door while Delray went and sat down next to Bridgette.

In a gentle voice he said, “Bridgette, this lady is Doctor Carol Sanders. She’s one of the female doctors who work for Vancouver Metro. You okay if she takes a look at you?”

Bridgette nodded and said, “Okay.”

Delray looked back at Sanders and nodded as he got up from the chair. The two switched places and as Sanders sat down, she introduced herself to Bridgette and then gently explained that the examination she was about to do would form part of the official evidence collected for the internal affairs investigation.

After Bridgette gave her consent, Sanders smiled at her and said, “You’ve been hit by a lot of broken glass. If anything looks serious, we’ll get you to a hospital—okay?”

Bridgette nodded and allowed Sanders to reach up and take the towel that she had been holding against the side of her head.

Sanders briefly examined her left ear and said, “Well… it looks like the bleeding has stopped,” and then proceeded to do a meticulous examination of her scalp and neck. Satisfied that nothing was too serious, she returned her attention to Bridgette’s left ear. After several minutes, she sat back in her chair and asked Bridgette if she hurt anywhere else.

Bridgette held up her hands and said, “A few small cuts on my hands from crawling across broken glass, but other than that I’m fine.”

“How does your left ear feel?”

“It throbs a bit.”

Sanders frowned and said, “You’re very lucky to be alive, Bridgette.”

She turned and motioned to Delray to come forward and then gently pulled back the bloody mattered hair from Bridgette’s ear again. Delray’s eyes widened and he let out a low whistle.

Slightly irritated, Bridgette said, “What?”

Sanders said, “You’ve lost the outside half of your left earlobe. Given what’s happened down here, I’d say you’ve been hit by a bullet. Fortunately, it’s stopped bleeding, but it will require some surgical dressing and a course of antibiotics.”

Bridgette was momentarily shocked as it began to dawn on her what had happened. She recalled the stinging sensation on her left ear after the first bullet had been fired but hadn’t given it much thought as she went into survival mode. She realized if she had been sitting any further to her left, the doctor examining her would have been in a morgue rather than Raisin’s office.

As she felt the color draining from her face, Delray asked, “Do you need to lie down, Bridgette?”

She shook her head and said, “No, I’ll be fine. I guess it’s
